Earn an Accounting DesignationBecome an Accountant with One of These Three Governing Bodies
There are a number of ways to become an accountant. A CGA, CMA or CA designation indicates professionalism and adherence to industry standards.
Professional accountants have a responsibility to adhere to the standards and principles of the accounting industry as a whole by employing the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) in their work. Those licensed with one of Canada's top three professional associations in the accounting industry are also accountable to their organization. These organizations provide support, ongoing education opportunities, training, scholarships and more. Learn the benefits of each program, the type of accounting opportunities offered and how to become an accountant with the CGA-Canada, CMA National, or CICA. Certified General Accountants Association of CanadaCGA is the internationally recognized designation for Certified General Accountants. In Canada, the CGA-Canada provides education, certification, professional development, and a code of ethics for general accountants. Founded in 1908 in Montreal, CGA-Canada funded a professional library and lectures on accounting practices. In 1913, the Government of Canada granted a federal charter allowing the organization to set standards and examinations for admission. The program has since expanded worldwide, into Bermuda, China, Macau, and Hong Kong, among other locations. CGA-Canada offers largely online and distance education learning opportunities, allowing students to participate without moving to a large city center to attend school. In order to earn a professional CGA designation, participants must complete a program consisting of online education, examinations and approved practical experience. Become a Certified Management Accountant with CMA NationalCMA National is the self-regulating professional association for management accountants. They offer members career resources, membership perks, a variety of insurance programs, professional development and business resources. In order to become a CMA, applicants must have completed a university degree. Acceptance into CMA National's program is conditional on the successful completion of an entrance exam. A two-year Strategic Leadership Program and relevant practical experience are necessary to earn the CMA designation. Earn a Chartered Accountant Designation with CICAChartered Accountants work in public practice, industry, government and education. A university degree with specific business credits, experience in a CA training office, and completion of the provincial program are prerequisites for acceptance into the national program. CICA encourages students to choose a specialization such as Investigative and Forensic Accounting, Business Valuation, or Insolvency and Restructuring. Students must complete all required examinations and practical requirements before earning the CA designation. CICA works closely with Canadian universities and international organizations, such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, to provide education and professional opportunities to CAs. Become an Accountant Through Online Distance Education OpportunitiesThe road to a professional accounting designation, while it is certainly not easy, is made less difficult with online learning opportunities. To become an accountant, first contact one of the professional associations listed above to learn more about the educational and practical prerequisites for their program. Ask for course recommendations or study options if upgrading is required.
